Starting a conversation

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to meet and greet people in Irish? Gaelic speakers staying at your B&B, hotel or hostel would instantly feel at home.

Here are a few common greetings to try out:

FáilteWelcome
Dia dhuit ar maidinGood morning
Dia dhuitGood afternoon
Oíche mhaithGood night

Maith and mhaith

Maith is good in Irish. Notice how it changes to mhaith after ‘oíche' and ‘maidin'. This is because the words maidin (morning) and oíche (night) are both feminine words. The word following a feminine word is aspirated - an ‘h' is put in after the first letter and softens the sound.
